On this first list there were 19 evacuees without designated billets, and I wonder if they were contingents taken to outlying villages such as Greatham, Liss and Selborne. For example, Miss Allam, the billeting officer for the Empshott district, took five or six in her car to Empshott. I and my brother George were among them, and we were dumped (literally!) on Mrs. Chappell at Empshott Green, who obviously did not want us. Some went into Mrs. Chiverton’s, next door, and others went to The Vicarage and Brook Cottage, all in Empshott Green.

There is a pencilled note that five boys, un-named, accompanied Mr. Forbes to the Bradford’s at Empshott Lodge.

The next indication of Billets Allocations is a list probably made in early 1940,

But I find it astounding that not one piece of paper, in these contemporary manuscript archives, is dated!
