This site links to many of the web sites about archives and archive resources in London. On this site (CLICK the logo left) you will find links to borough websites which contain substantial amounts of information about research facilities offered by the councils. Some boroughs have provided very little information on their websites, but this does not mean that they do not have a local studies room.

Here are some links to sites in, or about the U.K. (in no particular order) that you might find interesting: CLICK on logo.

World War Two was perhaps one of the most traumatic times in recent history. The fighting and hardships affecting the whole of Europe, the Pacific and having a knock on effect through out the world. Recently it was suggested that a project should be begun to collect the memories of people who have lived through the war. Not just the dramatic events which are usually recorded, but also the everyday memories.

This web site aims to be a collecting point for the project. If you lived through the war years please leave your memories on the form provided or send an e-mail. If you were born after the war and know someone who would like to share their stories, please ask them and add their tale to the collection.

Listed are military units, squadrons, regiments, ships (including RFAs) etc, and you can logon, find their old units, post reunions and hopefully hook up with some of their ex colleagues.

During World War 2 around three-and-a-half million British people, mainly children, were evacuated en masse, by train, bus and even boat, away from possible air-raids in the big cities. It was one of the biggest social upheavals the country has ever seen. Read more CLICK the logo.

What was it like in London during the Second World War? How did Londoners cope with the Blitz , the V1 flying bomb attacks, food rationing and all the other hardships of war? What happened to the children when London was in the front line of the battle against Nazi Germany?

HOLNET looks at this and more in the first section of a site dedicated exclusively to the history of London. .....................more.

Evacuees photo page - good collection of wartime photographs

WW11 Evacuees Registry - possible to put requests out for "missing" friends etc.

London Archives Link Page - a useful but limited links page.

Wartime Memories Project Links - extensive links page, little about the evacuation, mainly about military memories.

Were you an evacuee during the Second World War?

Were you a foster-parent, teacher, billeting officer or helper involved in the evacuation of British children during the Second World War?

Are you interested in the story of the evacuation?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions then you should know about the Evacuees Reunion Association. The ERA aims to provide links, support and counselling for former evacuees, to educate the public about the evacuation and to commemorate the exodus of the three-and-a-half million children from areas at risk of enemy bombing during the Second World War.
