Don Clark

I joined the school at Hawkley as one of the first intake of local boys. That would have been late 1939 or early 1940. I joined from Liss Junior School and left at the end of the war when the Battersea Central School returned to London.

Memories - A few of many - mostly happy.

First contact - oral test by Mr Ling.

Bus journey to and from school each day including collection of school milk from Liss Dairy each morning.

Nervousness and uncertainty at starting at a new school and meeting staff and pupils with a totally different background.

Quick and unobtrusive integration of pupils from vastly different environments.

Respect for staff.

Generally good standards of behaviour - there were a few exceptions.

Allocation to 'C' House - a fine body of "men".

House points.

Becoming a Monitor and subsequently a Prefect.

School dining - generally very good but sceptical about introduction to raw cabbage.

Introduction to subjects not previously familiar with, e.g. science, commercial subjects. PT.

Being hopeless at woodwork.

Achieving 100% RE examination mark.

Achieving good results in commercial subjects.

Acquiring two RSA Certificates.

General high standard of staff and achievement of pupils.

Annual sports day and cross-country run.

Carrying out bat and scoring 22 not out for 'C' House v Rest of School (21 all out) in Inter House cricket tournament.

Playing football for Hawkley v Rowlands Castle.

Joining school ACF Platoon.

Representing local (Petersfield) ACF Company at football and cross-country running.

Rambles on hangers, meeting Italian POW's.

Our contribution to the war effort - collecting Hips and Haws.

My predominant memory is of the school spirit, camaraderie, and the general pride in the school.
