HAWKLEY
REUNION
Saturday
6th July
2002
About
50 evacuees and
friends met on
a dry and
fairly warm day
at the Hawkley
Inn, our normal
host was away
on holiday, but
we all enjoyed
the drinks,
food and
company. The
photographer
rounded us all
up and took a
group
photograph of
those present
at the time,
see below. (
the Herald
Report is also
further down
this page). Later in
the afternoon
we proceeded to
the Village
hall for an
excellent tea
provided by the
ladies, again
our many thanks
to the
"team"

Prior
to that Cliff
our webmaster
demonstrated
the web site
via a powerful
lap top
computer and
projected onto
a screen via
yet another
modern
technology, a
computer
projector.
Those who had
not seen the
site were
advised to
visit their
children or
grandchildren
to see the
information,
there is much
text and time
is essential to
browse areas of
interest.
Cliff
pointed out
that the site
is only as good
as the
information he
receives, so
over to you.
With
regret we
departed to our
various
destination,
two eventually
to Australia
and another to
Scotland. See
you all next
year?
Well
done Harry
Withers, a
great day,
thanks.
These
were able to
attend.

Battersea
School
Evacuees
Reunite
Report
from the
Petersfield
Herald - July
2002
BATTERSEA
Central
School Old
Boys held
their
Hawkley
evacuees
reunion at
the village
recently.
Once
again a
glorious
sunny day
welcomed
the
evacuees
their wives
and other
relatives
to what has
become an
annual
event.
On this
occasion
about 50
people met
to swap
memories of
their time
in the
Hampshire
village
during the
Second
World War.
Also
joining the
event were
several
women whose
parents had
looked
after the
Battersea
boys and
their
younger
brothers
and
sisters.
This was
very
welcome, as
the
children
had been
hastily
removed
from London
to avoid
the
threatened
bombardment,
which
eventually
happened.
Hawkley
did not
escape the
attentions
of the
Luftwaffe
on
occasions
when the
RAF had
forced it
away from
both
Portsmouth
and
Southampton.
The
reunion
began at
the Hawkley
Inn,
followed by
a wander
round the
old haunts
and
billets.
The day
finished
with a
much-appreciated
tea
generously
provided by
the women
of the
village.
This
year there
was a
computer
projection
presentation
on part of
the Hawkley
Evacuees
website.
Cliff
Douthwaite
set this up
and keeps
the
information
up to date.
Members
were
saddened to
hear of the
recent
death of
Roly
Forbes, who
lived at
Steep and
usually
attended
the
reunion. Mr
Forbes was
a master at
Battersea,
and
travelled
with the
evacuees to
Hawkley
before
joining the
armed
forces.
Arrangements
are already
under way
for next
year's
reunion,
which will
take place
on July 5,
2003.

HAWKLEY
REUNION
Saturday
6th July
2002
You
probably do
not need to
be reminded
that the
day is fast
approaching
when we
shall be
meeting
again at
Hawkley
first in
the Inn,
then onto
the Village
Hall and
hopefully,
we will be
many in
number once
more.
If
all goes
well we
will have a
lap top and
computer
projector
to show
those
without
Internet
access,
also a hard
print for
you all to
make
correction
and or
additions,
so start to
get your
memory bank
in
trim.
If
you have
photographs
from the
box Brownie
days please
bring them,
loan to the
webmaster
for later
inclusion
on this
site. You
will get
them back PROVIDED
they are
clearly
marked with
you name
etc. Also
who they
are on the
picture and
date/location!
